Learning Solutions Guam specializes in tutoring utilizing the Orton-Gillingham approach.

The overall purpose of the Orton-Gillingham approach is to help the student become a competent reader, writer, and independent learner.

This approach may be beneficial for those who:

  • struggle with reading, writing or spelling,
  • have been diagnosed with dyslexia, and/or
  • have been identified as having a specific learning disability in reading or writing

The Orton-Gillingham approach is multi-sensory, structured, sequential, cumulative, cognitive, and emotionally sound.  Students engage in multi-sensory learning,  with each lesson incorporating visual, auditory, and kinesthetic components.  Learning is structured, sequential, and cumulative; students know what to expect with structured lessons that start with step-by-step basic concepts and end with more complex language activities.  Students are taught the reasons for what they are learning and understand when to employ learning strategies.   It is very important that students keep positive feelings about themselves and about learning.  Recognizing the various needs of the learner and personalizing lessons allows for an approach that will not frustrate the learner and direct the student toward success.  Students become confident and motivated as they continue to successfully navigate through lessons.  The approach provides a close student-teacher relationship that provides continuous feedback and positive reinforcement.
