This video is just a small glimpse into what a child with a learning disability may feel when trying to read.

A lack of word reading automaticity and trouble decoding results in a variety of problems.

Trouble with decoding impacts both reading fluency and reading comprehension. These readers are focusing their attention primarily on decoding individual words, which slows the reader down and by the end of a passage the reader has not comprehended the passage as a whole.

Students who have difficulty reading can experience frustration and anxiety in the classroom, which may result in a variety of behavioral and emotional problems such as acting out or shutting down.  It is very likely that these problems impact their self-esteem.

The Orton-Gillingham approach not only addresses reading and writing problems, it also pays special attention to the child’s emotional well being.
